Trade Unionists for a New and United Ireland (TUNUI) sends solidarity to Palestinian workers who are embarking on a general strike on Tuesday 18th May.
Workers across Historic Palestine are taking strike action against Israeli Apartheid, colonialism and mass murder of innocent civilians.
TUNUI spokesperson and Fórsa official Richie Carrothers called on trade unionists in Ireland to reaffirm their support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement.
He said: “As Israel unleashes further indiscriminate air and ground attacks on defenceless innocent people across Gaza and the West Bank, the international community should no longer avert their eyes or engage in hand-wringing diplomacy. We need action today – Israel must be held accountable for their actions and the slaughter and ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people”.
“TUNUI salutes the heroism of Palestinian workers who today are embarking on a general strike against Israel’s human rights violations. This is a significant development in the struggle against Apartheid and settler colonialism, and Irish trade unionists send their full solidarity.
“The most vital thing that trade unionists in Ireland can do is to actively support Palestinian civil society’s Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. BDS upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity”.
“Israel is occupying and colonising Palestinian land, discriminating against Palestinians and denying refugees the right to return home. Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, BDS urges action to pressure Israel to comply with international law. We should all join the fight for Palestinian justice and liberation. BDS presents our best opportunity to show our solidarity”.
“Earlier this month, TUNUI held a public meeting and we were delighted to be joined by Jamal Juma, a leading BDS activist. He gave a first hand account of what was happening in Sheik Jarrah and the resistance to Israel’s endless theft of land and homes in the West Bank.
“Importantly, he emphasized that solidarity actions in Ireland are noticed and deeply appreciated by Palestinians. With this in mind, Irish trade unionists need to double down on our efforts to build solidarity with the Palestinian struggle and help end the enormous injustice that is Israeli Apartheid.”
